Online and in the news we’re told by health experts at Harvard Medical School about symptoms we should be watching for the onset of the swine flu virus.  The swine flu protection mask is one precaution from catching and spreading the disease.

The initial symptoms of the swine flu virus are very much like the symptoms of other forms of flu viruses we see every year during flu season. Muscle aches and runny nose, fever and sore throat would be present accompanied in this type of flu by nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which doesn\’t commonly appear in other forms of flu, but which is more common with this swine flu. The sneezing and coughing symptoms spread the germs as they become airborn and is one reason that wearing the swine-flu protection mask offers some protection from catching the virus if you are in a community where this flu has emerged.

Doctors confronted with large numbers of persons exhibiting flu like symptoms are taking throat sample swabs or coughed up sample material to send to the state public health laboratory for testing.

There are several steps you can take to protect yourself from catching swine flu:

a. Wash your hands frequently or
b. Use alcohol-based hand cleaners
c. Do not shake hands or exchange kisses when greeting people.
d. Avoid contact with people with flu symptoms.
e. If you develop sneezing and coughing, be sure to use tissues to wipe your nose and cover your mouth. Always dispose of these tissues in the trash or toilet bowl.
f. You may want to wear a disposable swine-flu protective mask when you are in an environment where there is a person who has the flu symptoms or if you are in a community where an outbreak of the flu has occurred.
